Katherine tailors counselling around the client’s stated goals and needs. She helps her clients to process distressing experiences and to decrease feelings of anxiety, sadness, depression or confusion. Katherine is skilled at helping clients overcome phobias and trauma and shift from feelings of being “stuck” to feelings of freedom to choose a way forward.
Katherine’s expertise is helping clients to heal from all forms of trauma with a speciality in helping people who have experienced child abuse and family violence. She supports clients to transition from surviving to thriving by cultivating self-compassion and inner strength. Katherine supports people to achieve robust mental health and regain their sense of wellbeing.
In addition to providing counselling to clients, Katherine also works as a Family Report Writer (often termed a Family Consultant). In the complex landscape of family law, her role is to provide the Court and families with an objective forensic assessment of family dynamics and children’s needs. As an independent expert, Katherine bridges the gap between social science and the legal system to assist in determining parenting arrangements that truly serve the best interest of the child.

Qualifications
Katherine has a:
- PhD in Social Work from Melbourne University (2017)
- Master of Social Work from Melbourne University (2005)
- Bachelor of Social Work from Monash University (1992)
- Bachelor of Arts from Melbourne University (1990)
Katherine is an accredited mental health social worker and is registered with a Medicare Provider Number. She is a registered member of the Australian Association of Social Workers, Pacifica Congress and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. She is accredited with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia as a Panel Family Consultant.

Professional Experience
Katherine has vast experience in the field of child safety, mental health and trauma. She has held several Chief Executive Officer roles of influential organisations including Child Wise, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Australian Council for Children and Youth Organisations. She was the inaugural Director of Professional Standards at the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne where she led a substantial 5-year project of cultural transformation and reform creating safe environments for children.

She worked for many years providing counselling and therapeutic support to victims/survivors of child sexual abuse. Katherine is an expert in the protection and wellbeing of children. She appeared as a subject matter expert witness on grooming at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Approach
Katherine utilises a strengths-based approach to counselling drawing on multiple therapeutic methods including:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Schema Therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Narrative Therapy
- Mindfulness
Katherine also assists clients with psycho-educational techniques providing clients with practical strategies to develop emotional wellbeing.

Katherine’s also draws on a systems theory which takes a holistic approach to working with an individual. A systems approach is informed by the understanding that a person is impacted by unique individual factors (e.g. family of origin and personality traits) as well as by extrinsic societal factors such as structural inequality, gender, socio- economic factors, power structures, belief systems, institutions, policies, politics, and the legal system. Katherine’s practice is LGBTIQA+ friendly.

Counselling Focus
Katherine provides counselling for adults (over 18). She works therapeutically (face to face and via telehealth) with people who are facing challenges such as:
- Anxiety and depression
- Trauma
- A history of child abuse and neglect (including institutional abuse)
- Experiences of sexual assault, sexual harassment, family violence
- Relationship difficulties
- Learning Difficulties
- Low Self-esteem
- Work related stress
- Phobias
- Hoarding
Katherine offers clinical supervision to social workers and debriefing for people in high stress roles. She provides services to several legal firms debriefing staff exposed to distressing issues in their daily work.
